Brussels
To start your visit to the capital, head to the Grand Place and the Ilot Sacré, the historic heart of Brussels. Admire the imposing architecture and enjoy breakfast at one of the charming cafes on the square.
After breakfast, visit the Magritte Museum to immerse yourself in the world of the surrealist artist René Magritte and discover his most iconic works, and the Royal Museums of Fine Arts, where you can admire masterpieces by famous artists such as Rubens and van Eyck, and take a stroll in the Art Mountain.
Nearby, you can visit the majestic Notre Dame de Sablon church, a sublime example of Gothic architecture. On your way back to the center, walk along the Galerie de la Reine, an elegant and charming shopping arcade, perfect for shopping and observing city life.
Two extraordinary parks not to be missed in the city are the Parc de Bruxelles, located near the Royal Palace, an official residence of the Belgian royal family, and the Parc du Cinquantenaire, where you can admire historical monuments and interesting museums, including the Automobile Museum.
Where to shop: Ultimate Sneaker Store, a paradise for sneaker lovers, and Peinture Fraiche Library, a paradise for book lovers.
Where to eat: Wolf Sharing Food Market is a covered market with various stands offering cuisine from around the world; Frit Flagey, Belgium is known for its French fries and this small stand makes some of the best! Which sauce to choose? If you like spicy, I recommend Samurai; if you prefer sweet and sour, Brazil. Finally, two small cafes I recommend are Bouche and Miss B.
Ghent
Spend the morning exploring the cultural heritage of Ghent, visiting local museums, or taking a stroll along the Leie River. Begin your day by visiting the magnificent Saint Bavo’s Cathedral, a masterpiece of Gothic architecture with impressive interiors and colorful stained glass windows.
After the cathedral, head to the Gravensteen, the Castle of the Counts of Flanders. Explore its towers, and dungeons, and admire the city views from the top. Take a walk down Werregarenstraat, known as the Graffiti Street. Admire the colorful murals and street art adorning the walls.
Conclude the day by exploring the Patershol Quarter, a charming labyrinth of narrow, picturesque streets, full of cozy restaurants and trendy cafes.
If you’re in the mood for a good coffee, I recommend Koffeine.
Bruges
Bruges, among all the cities in Belgium that I have visited, has stolen my heart. Start your day by strolling the picturesque cobblestone streets, admiring the well-preserved medieval buildings. Then, visit the Basilica of the Holy Blood, a sacred place that houses a precious relic and offers a breathtaking view inside the basilica.
After the basilica, head to the Belfry and climb to the top to enjoy a stunning panoramic view of the city. Admire the ancient bells and discover the history of this imposing bell tower. Continue your day by visiting the Church of Our Lady, where you can admire the majestic statue of the Madonna by Michelangelo and other significant works of art.
Finally, don’t miss the Stadhuis, the town hall of Bruges, a masterpiece of Gothic architecture with sumptuous interiors and elaborate decorations.
