Washington D.C. and what you can’t miss

Washington D.C. is not a big city, but yet is full of things to see. Some of them may not meet your taste, but you can’t skip some experiences, especially if you are going to stay in the city for a long time. One of the museum you have to visit in the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM) is the United States’ official memorial to the Holocaust. The collections contain more than 12,750 artifacts, 49 million pages of archival documents, 85,000 historical photographs, a list of over 200,000 registered survivors and their families, 1,000 hours of archival footage, 93,000 library items, and 9,000 oral history testimonies.

The Museum is a clear and undeniable evidence that a genocide and hate like this must not happen again. The Museum is really big and makes you travel to the mental illness of the Nazi regime and the effects it had on millions of people all around the world. As you entered you will receive an Identification Card, one of these million people who died or survived this abnormal tragedy. Bring with you a lot of strength because the Museum is not about the past, but also the present wars and genocides that are happening in the Middle East, right under our noses.

After this crazy awareness, walk towards the Wharf District, a beautiful and completely renewed neighborhood where you can enjoy amazing views and seafood, from shrimps, crabs, and oysters the markets docks of the Fish Market will make you hungry! I just took a coffee (coffee of the day) at Dolcezza Gelato, sat down and enjoyed the view. The best way to recharge your batteries!

Things you can’t miss in Washington D.C.

It’s hard to define what you can’t miss in this city, as 1 I am the kind of person who wants to see and explore everything and 2 most of the things here are really worth it. If you don’t know what to do during your afternoon, and you don’t feel like going Downtown I have the two best options for you! (I noticed I always have two..)

The first one is to visit the colonial City of Alexandria that you can reach in less than 1 hour by metro. Alexandria is an independent city in Virginia. It is largely populated by professionals working in the federal civil service or the U.S. military. The historic center of Alexandria is known as Old Town and it has a great concentration of boutiques, restaurants, antique shops and theaters. Take a great walk-in King Street and try to imagine how the city could have been during Colonial times. It’s not that hard to picture it, as a part of a big shop and fast food chains nothing seems changed. In the city you can also do a Ghost and Graveyard Tour to discover the secrets that looming in the city.

The other experience you can’t miss is to watch a baseball game. Baseball is the American game (besides football, obviously). I was shocked to know that a match lasts more than four hours and that for many people the game is not even important, they just hang out to eat, drink beer and sometimes is the perfect place for a first date (I won’t comment on this one). Tickets are usually cheap and you will enter in the magical kingdom of songs and games. In fact, baseball games are not just about the game but also about singing songs and have fun even if don’t have a clue of what it’s going on. For example, at the Nationals Park I saw Washington Nationals against Atlanta Braves just for two hours, I had fun, I eat and then I left. Just have fun and don’t worry if you don’t understand, that’s not the point why you are there!
