Washington D.C.: let’s end the Mall and move on!

Here we are again! And so much to talk about also in this article! Washington D.C makes me crazy!

We left our tour right in the middle of the Mall, and I finally can tell you we are at the end. From the Washington Monument and the Tidal Basin, you will be able to see the Thomas Jefferson Memorial (just renewed). If you go around the Basin and you reach the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool you will be able to see Korean War Veteran Memorial and on the other side the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, to finally reach the Lincoln Memorial.

Tour 1

At this point, right behind the Memorial, you can choose between two different trips, that I talk to you about now. You can reach the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts or cross the Arlington Memorial Bridge and reach the homonymous Cemetery. The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts is the United States National Cultural Center and hosts a wide array of performances from theater, dance, ballet, and orchestral, chamber, jazz, popular to folk music, most of the time free!

On the other hand, the Arlington National Cemetery is a United States military cemetery in Virginia, just across the Potomac River, where the dead of the nation’s conflicts have been buried, beginning with the Civil War, as well as reinterred dead from earlier wars. Here you can find the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and the Kennedys, as well as many other important American figures. Take a walk here is not as weird as you can think. You have to be respectful, for sure, but at the same time you can quite feel the peace that surrounds you.

If you choose to visit the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts you’ll find yourself in the fanciest part of the city: the neighborhood of Georgetown, historic, commercial and entertaining district. The primary streets contain high-end shops, bars, and restaurants. Its Waterfront and Park are plenty of great fish restaurants and brunch places just like Farmers Fishers Bakers, Fiola Mare and Tony and Joe’s Seafood. If you then walk towards the center of the neighborhood you can stroll along these beautiful colonial houses with red bricks that make you feel like in a time machine. Everything is studied in detail from the flowers to the decorations at the doors, especially if it’s Halloween. Relax doing shopping or eating the tasty Georgetown cupcakes and discover the old George Washington University founded in 1821.

Tour 2 of Washington D.C.

Instead, if you don’t feel to do neither of the two options, here I am to offer you another solution. If you have to take the metro to go Downtown get off at Union Station, that worths a visit because it’s really beautiful. Then walk towards the National Building Museum, but I don’t recommend you to visit it, I went and I was really disappointed. Anyway, you will be near Chinatown with the Gallery Place mall and the Capitol One Arena. After a shopping session and before going ahead, you have to stop at the National Portrait Gallery where you will find beautiful portraits of the most important personalities of the world but also amazing impressionist paintings.

From here you can reach the CityCenterDC, the fanciest open-air mall always with festive decorations. If you wanna grab something healthy you can stop at Fruitive, otherwise don’t worry, here you’ll find plenty of places suitable to any taste. Then you can go towards The White House (yes, again), pass it and stop at the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, mostly known for its contemporary art. Even if you don’t usually like contemporary art, go in, it’s free and you will enjoy the beautiful view of the building itself. Being located on Pennsylvania Avenue, you can find nearby Founding Farmers DC, a great place to eat, where they promote sustainability and quality food.

If you want to end your day at best go to Dupont Circle, a traffic circle, park, neighborhood, and historic district. The neighborhood is known for its high concentration of embassies and think tanks. And you can totally enjoy a walk in the beautiful and quiet streets. But here you have two main options: visit The Phillips Collection, an art museum founded by Duncan Phillips and Marjorie Acker Phillips in 1921. Among the artists represented in the collection, there are Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Gustave Courbet, Vincent van Gogh, Henri Matisse, Claude Monet, Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque and Paul Klee. You totally can’t lose the opportunity to visit this beautiful villa and the collections of artworks inside! The other option I talked to you about is to relax and take a drink in one of the hundreds of places you find around you!
